HOW DO STUDENTS "GET IN" QUEST?

When are students identified for the QUEST program?

All elementary students new to LISD are screened in August or May. All LISD kindergarten students are screened in January. Several summer testing dates are offered for secondary students in grades 6-12. These dates are posted on the district website.

Students in grades K-12 may be nominated at any time by teachers, counselors, administrators, parents, self, or peers. The person nominating a student should complete a referral form and return it to the campus QUEST teacher. You may download all of these forms and return them to the campus QUEST teacher.
Below is the Parent Referral download.

General Intellectual Survey
Parents and teachers may download this survey and return it to the QUEST teacher.
Who does the screening and testing?
The QUEST resource teachers at each campus administer the screening measures. The measures are evaluated and scored by the QUEST Identification and Placement Committee. This committee is made up of the entire district K-12 QUEST teachers plus the district coordinator. All have at least 30 hours of training in gifted education plus additional hours of training in testing and identification of gifted students. Placement decisions are made by this committee.

Where can I find more information about the screening process?

Outstanding Student Products displaying creative awareness:
If a parent is referring their child for QUEST screening, then you must gather samples of your child's creativity. The form below will guide you in putting together your child's works of creativity. When you are finished please submit your child's products to the campus QUEST teacher along with the parent referral form and the general intellectual survey.
Screening Kinder Students

QUEST serves kindergarten students in two ways.
• During the first semester, QUEST teachers provide enrichment opportunities for all kindergarten students. The QUEST teacher goes into each kindergarten classroom at least four times during the semester to provide foundational enrichment activities in critical and creative thinking. This helps prepare the students for the type of thinking that will be tested in January. The QUEST teacher is also available to provide, depending upon campus needs and time constraints, additional support and enrichment for kindergarten teachers and students.

• The initial QUEST screening on all Kindergarten students begins in January 2009. All kindergarten students are automatically screened for the QUEST gifted and talented program. The state of Texas requires that kindergarten gifted students are served by March 1. However, the screening process is on-going, and we will continue to gather information about your student's intellectual and creative thinking abilities throughout the kindergarten year.

If you have not already completed a Parent Referral, you may do so at anytime by downloading it from the leanderisd.org website or by requesting a copy from me. You may also gather a portfolio of Outstanding Student Products, independently done by your child that demonstrates creative and divergent thinking."
