The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are what dictate what teachers teach. Here are the second grade Language Arts TEKS:

Second grade students are required to read a specific level of book at the end of each of our 9 week periods. Remember, your child must be able to retell the story using details of the story before they are permitted to move up to the next level.

1st 9 weeks: Level 18
2nd 9 weeks: Level 20
3rd 9 weeks: Level 24
4th 9 weeks: Level 28

If your student is reading a Level 18 or higher, please go to the Comprehension tab on the left. There are a few different types of book reports for your child to choose from to check their understanding of higher-leveled books.

These book reports are important in 2nd grade. We've introduced them now so students will have a chance to get accustomed to working with them!
