Elementary Theatre Arts
Albert Einstein said "imagination is more important than knowledge." In Theatre Arts we try to tap into the innermost part of each student to help them discover the creative self through pantomime, improvisation, and movement. Drama is a kinesthetic teaching method that benefits those students who learn best by doing (moving their bodies). Research provides evidence to support the importance of movement for learning. Drama develops imagination and storytelling which contribute to more detailed and creative writing. Puppetry, storytelling, and mask making are just a few of the tools used to bring to life the history of the theatre. Performances are done several times a year in formal(stage) and informal (classroom) settings. Theatre is a basic part of human existance and we are proud in LISD to include it in the basic core education for each student.
A NOTE FROM THE TEACHER
After enjoying a professional dance career for twenty years, I decided to pursue my public school teaching certification at Texas State University. While completing my student teaching at Cypress Elementary, I fell in love with the Theatre Arts program. Life takes us in many places that we never imagined. I never knew that I would be teaching Theatre Arts at Whitestone Elementary, but I must say that it has been one of the best experiences of my life. I love weaving creative dramatics, student life experiences, curriculum basics and the excitement of stage performing, together to create a rich and enlightening experience for my students. My mission is to equip and provide my students with the skills necessary to develop an appreciation for the art of drama and theatre. My objective is to integrate the 10 Ethical principals into the daily drama experience. Teamwork, loyalty, and pursuit of excellence are at the heart of every theatre class and rehearsal.
