The Totem Pole
The Totem Pole is an object representing native family kinships and stories. In general, totem poles, just like Great Seals and Coats of Arms mean: "This is who we are; we have prestige, we are united, and we are proud to derive from, fight for, and stand for the qualities these symbols imply." For example, the Coat of Arms of Canada features a lion and unicorn, British flag, maple leaves, fleur de lis and a motto, that sums up its national identity and origins.
In QUEST, we have been studying about our place within the family and where our giftedness comes from. Yes, they have been studying you this week! They may have also asked to you to complete one of the Multiple Intelligence tests for them. It helps them to be able to compare how they are smart with other members of the family. Feel free to look back into those grandparents and aunts and uncles as well. It won’t take but a few minutes and means so much to them. It has been a fun start to the QUEST year! I’m looking forward to seeing what develops.
The Project (to be completed at home)
Create a Totem Pole that tells a “family story” using unusual and/or recyclable materials. It should be a three-dimensional totem pole that is between 12 to 18 inches tall and free standing (ready to hang from the ceiling). Each member of the family should be represented on the totem pole. The project is due in the QUEST room on Wednesday, October 1. We will have a Totem Pole Celebration to celebrate our Totem Poles and “family stories” on Thursday, October 2.
