How exciting! Our first inter guard competition is almost here. And as you are all new to this activity, I thought I would provide some helpful information to get you prepared for the wonderful season of performances ahead of us.
Will a trip itinerary be provided?
Yes, I will provide each student with two copies of the itinerary for each contest. One is for the student to take with them to the competition, and the second is for the parents to keep. I will also post the itineraries on the website for downloading.
Itineraries will be passed out about a week before each contest. Note that times are fairly set in stone. However, sometimes the circuit does have to make schedule changes if schools back out of the contest, if there is an emergency, etc… If any schedule change does happen, I will let you know immediately.
Where and when do I drop off my student on the day of the contest?
Students will always meet in the CPMS cafeteria. Parents should drop off students in the bus lanes where they can access the cafeteria through the patio doors.
Students should be dropped off at the time indicated on the itinerary for that day’s contest. Please be on time. Allow for traffic, appointments, etc…
Where and when do I pick up my student after the contest?
Parents should pick up students in the bus lanes ONLY. Students should not be picked up in any other part of the school grounds due to poor lighting and lack of supervision.
Parents should pick up students according to the time listed on the itinerary for that day’s contest. Please be on time. I will not leave until all students are picked up. Be considerate, I am tired too and do not want to spend extra time here waiting. Allow for traffic, appointments, etc… Arrival times are an approximation, but we are almost always on schedule.
May I take my child home after they perform?
I would like all members of the Guard to stay for the entire contest. Firstly, I want the students to see the performances of other, more experienced teams. Secondly, the awards ceremony is at the end, and I want the kids to be present for the results. Thirdly, the floor and equipment must be loaded. It is not fair if only a few kids have to do all the work.
If there is an unavoidable reason, and you must take your student early, the parent will need to let Mr. Edwards know in advance and sign out the student in person with Mr. Edwards.
Can parents, family, or friends ride the bus with the Guard?
No, I am sorry. Only students and district-approved chaperones may ride the buses to the contests.
How much do tickets cost to attend each contest?
Prices vary for each of the contests because the show host can set prices. However, they are generally around $5.00 per adult. Most shows offer discounts for children and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased at tables set up at each contest.
How much money does my child need to bring?
Students will need money for food and for any souvenirs they may want to purchase. There will be pictures, DVDs, and videos for sale at State Championships.
What items should my students bring to the contests?
Students will need to have a bag containing their costume (the overcoat, unitard, sunglasses), hair and make-up supplies (brush/comb, hairspray, gel, bobby pins), and clothes to change into (guard shirt, jeans, belt, tennis shoes).
What items should my students NOT bring to the contests?
Students should not bring valuables to the contest (iPods, CD players, purses) because we have no way of locking those up. Oftentimes contest sites provide a classroom, but occasionally we are only given a hallway to put our bags in. Therefore, theft is a possibility.
Who will be supervising the students?
We will have four chaperones plus myself attending each contest. We will be riding the bus and will be in direct contact with the students at all times.
