Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe's book Understanding by Design (2005) guided curriculum teams in designing curriculum units and 9 week common assessments that will lead students to deeper understandings of state standards.
The purpose of the elementary curriculum documents is to provide an aligned curriculum framework that will define what is imperative to teach within the course of the school year. The framework will promote understanding, facilitate the transfer of knowledge to new and different settings and support differentiation to meet the needs of all students.
The LISD Elementary Curriculum Documents will be followed to determine what is taught within each 9 weeks for Language Arts and Mathematics. Four 9 week common assessments will be given to every K-5th grade student in Language Arts and Mathematics.
K-5 science teachers will use the LISD Elementary Science Units of Study and other resources to provide science instruction. Curriculum and materials included in the A, B and C Science Modules will be used to provide instruction for the first three units included on the Units of Study. Nine week common assessments will be given after instruction of each module in grades 3, 4, and 5. |
