The goal of these handwriting guidelines is that all students will know how to write and read cursive handwriting, but will be allowed to use the most legible handwriting for tests including TAKS. All spelling tests should be done in manuscript as stated in the Spelling Curriculum Guide.
Kindergarten – Introduce/model D'Nealian manuscript upper and lower case letters, tripod grip, and correct posture for handwriting. Might use the clock face as a tool.
First Grade- Instruct D'Nealian manuscript upper and lower case letters, tripod grip, and correct posture for handwriting. Might use the clock face as a tool.
Second Grade – No later than the final 9 weeks of the school year introduce the lower case cursive letters, including strokes and connectors consistent with D'Nealian.
Third Grade - Strengthen the lower case and introduce upper case cursive letters. Require cursive on some random assignments. Do not require cursive handwriting on tests.
The teacher should model cursive handwriting.
Fourth/Fifth Grade – Require cursive on some homework, and random classroom assignments. Allow student to work in the style most comfortable and legible for tests.
