The LISD Learning Model will be used as the guiding document for decision making regarding educational practices in LISD. Teachers and students will use data to guide and personalize instruction.
The LISD Elementary Curriculum Documents will be followed to determine what is taught within each 9 weeks for Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. Four 9 week common assessments will be given to every K-5th grade student in Language Arts and Mathematics.
K-5 science teachers will use the LISD Elementary Science Units of Study and other resources to provide science instruction. Curriculum and materials included in the A, B and C Science Modules will be used to provide instruction for the first three units included on the Units of Study. Nine week common assessments will be given after instruction of each module in grades 3, 4, and 5.
Every K-2nd grade student shall be administered an early reading instrument (DIBELS/MIDE and DRA/EDL) three times yearly to determine reading level and to identify how students are progressing as readers. The data from the reading instrument will be used to instruct students at their level in a small group setting.
Every 3rd-5th grade student shall be administered the DRA/EDL to determine his/her reading level a minimum of two times per year. The data from the reading instrument will be used to instruct students at their level in a small group setting.
Every K-2 student will receive explicit and systematic instruction in phonics.
We will emphasize that spelling matters in all subjects across all grade levels.
Students at risk for difficulties in reading and/or mathematics will be identified and provided targeted instruction during the school day. Student data will be used to make appropriate instructional decisions.
In school tutorials (flex grouping) will be provided to 3rd, 4th & 5th graders 25-30 minutes a day. Student data will be used to determine flexible groups and adjust instruction.
Students will be identified and instructed in challenging curriculum through accelerated mathematics and/or advanced language arts.
We will conduct student-led conferences at every grade level to build student ownership of learning.
Every K-5 student will have a student data notebook to document progress, develop goals and plans for improvement, and celebrate successes.
