A Shiny New Penny!
Our class has been learning how to be good Scientists and have been learning all about the Scientific Process through many fun investigations and experiments. We did an experiment last week to see what would happen if we placed dirty pennies in a solution of vinegar and salt. The solution made the pennies very shiny and clean-looking. We left our pennies in the solution on Friday because some students were curious as to how shiny they might become if we left them in the solution over the weekend. To our surprise, we discovered on Monday, upon returning to school that our pennies had become very dirty-looking again. We then decided to leave them in even longer to see what would happen. It has now been 5 days since we started the experiment and the pennies are actually being "eaten" away by the solution. The students are very amazed and excited to see the changes that have taken place. We have concluded that at first the solution removes any dirt and grime from the penny, but if left in the vinegar and salt solution, it will continue to eat away at every part of the penny, not just the dirt and grime that was on it in the first place. How exciting!

Shalene, our brave parent helper! She was a superb pancake cook!
Below are pictures of students mixing the ingredients for pancakes into a solution. Then we cooked the batter to demonstrate chemical changes. Of course we had to "taste" our chemical change to make sure there was indeed a chemical change. We even took it as far as adding a solid (butter) and a liquid (syrup)to our pancakes, just so we could add more "matter" content to our activity.
