How Do I Help My Child Choose a Book?
We teach children how to choose a "Good Fit" book. We practice in the classroom and in the library. Research says that children should spend most of their time reading books that are at their independent level. A child's independent level is a book in which they have around 99 % accuracy. They should be able to read fluently and it should feel easy to them.

It is still important to read to your child because many children are interested in books that are at a higher level and it's fun!

The Five Finger Test
We also use the 5 Finger Test to help us choose a book:
Pick up a book and turn to any page.
Begin reading.
Hold up one finger for each word you come to that you don't know.
If you're holding up 4 or 5 fingers at the bottom of the page, then it's not a "Good Fit" book for you right now.
