What will students learn in the 5th Grade Language Arts class?
I will be following the State Curriculum (called TEKS). www.tea.state.tx.us/teks/#teksbygrade Just click on 5th Grade. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Check out the individual subject area pages for more details
What specific subjects are covered in Language Arts
My class covers three major subject areas: Reading, Writing, and Spelling. While the major focus in 5th Grade is Reading (in regards to passing the Reading TAKS test), both Writing and Spelling taught with equal importance.
For more information on each subject, please click on the specific page.
What goals are set for the students?
While each and every student is taught as an individual, I have overall goals for every child who comes through my doors:
*independently choose an appropriate level reading book
*find a style/genre of book to enjoy reading
*communicate about a book they've read (both written and spoken)
*write both Fiction and Narrative (true) stories
*write complete, organized, detailed stories/essays
*to come up with ideas to write about
*develop a unique, personal voice in writing
*recognize the importance of proper grammar and spelling in their writing and the world around them
*overcome any obstacles that may prevent their ultimate success in Language Arts
*to not be afraid of trying something new and making mistakes along the way

How can I prepare my child for the TAKS test?
Every student should be ready to take the TAKS when it arrives. This year, it will be administered on March 4, 2008. All year, I will be teaching them not only the concepts needed but testing strategies.
www.tea.state.tx.us/ If you know your child has test anxieties, be sure to talk with me as soon as possible. You can also check out this website that has previously given TAKS tests.
