Reading Expectations
Book Bingo

This is an ongoing assignment and expectation where students pick their path and complete a minimum of 5 self-selected books. Please visit my "downloads" page to view a Book Bingo sheet and read more details.

Reader Response Journals and Vocabulary Bookmarks

In order to foster and assess students' higher level critical thinking skills with self-selected independent reading material, I will require my students to "log" their thinking in their red reading spirals. Every 3 weeks, students will turn in 3 Reader Response Journals for a grade (breaks down to 1 per week). This is the bulk of their reading homework and will be ongoing all year. Additionally, to build vocabulary at each student's indpendent level, students will use a provided vocabulary bookmark to jot down new words in their chosen books then write the sentences that used the noted words and official dictionary definitions in the back 1/3 of their red reading spirals. The vocabulary work is due every 3 weeks along with the response journals.

Reading Logs

In keeping with district reading goals, I will expect students to read a total of a 140 minutes per week. In an effort to go green, I will not issue traditional reading logs for students to complete and parents to sign off on weekly. However, I will check student planners every Monday for a minute total and parent signature verifying students read for the documented amount of time.

Writing Expecations
Though writing is not a TAKS tested skill in 5th grade, we will continue to work diligently to master and produce top notch writing which would earn a 3 or 4 on TAKS come 7th grade.

The guiding language for our writing instruction will be the 6+1 Traits of Writing.

Grammar (mechanics/conventions), and spelling will be integrated as mini lessons and ongoing targeted skills.
