Language Arts Instruction
In addition to daily reading groups, your Grizzly will receive instruction with a phonics-based approach called Johnny Can Spell. This will be my 6th year to teach JCS to my first grade class. During this instruction time, not only do we instruct on phonics and spelling, but we also focus on parts of speech, sentence structure, types of sentences, handwriting, ABC order, and much more.
My spelling instruction will teach your child how a word is spelled, and take it to the next step, teaching why a word is spelled the way it is. We will begin the year by learning the sounds and correct formation (handwriting) for the single letter phonograms, which includes the 26 letters of the alphabet. Once your child has been instructed on the sounds and formations, we will begin our spelling words.
Throughout the year, your child will be learning the 70 most common phonograms and many phonics rules. In place of a Friday spelling test, your child will have spelling dictation in class 4 days a week. He/she will bring home the dictation paper and practice any misspelled words for homework.
