Reading In First Grade
Reading in first grade inculdes a variety of strategies and activities.


Guided Reading
Guided reading is small group instruction. The instruction focuses on skills needs specific to a small group of children and their developing reading needs. Instruction is flexible and reflects the groups needs.


Independent Reading
Students select books that are appropriate for their level of reading. Independent means that you can read the book by yourself.


Partner Reading
Reading a book with a classmate. Students can take turns reading a book or they can read the same book together.


Shared Reading
Students and teacher are engaged in reading text from a variety of genres. This can be done with big books, or when each student has a copy of the text. This allows students to be exposed to reading texts that may beyond their current reading level. A variety of reading skills can be taught to the large or small group.


Read Alouds
Reading done by a fluent reader on a daily basis. This is a time to expose students to a variety of genres, allows students to improve listening and recall skills. During this time the teacher can model a variety of reading strategies.
This can be done by a teacher, parent, or older student.



Making Words
Students use cards with letters on to manipulate and form words. Students work with word families and start with simple words and progress to more complex words.
