My name is Marilyn Goeger and I teach three different classes that enable students to generalize employment curriculum in the community setting. The Supported Employment Service provides the opportunity for students to work in the community at a job of their choice based on individual preferences, interests, strengths, and needs. The Community Career Investigation Class allows a student to participate in job sampling as part of their curriculum which helps them to be better prepared for a paid job in the future. The Community Based Vocational Instruction Class also includes job sampling along with campus-based jobs to ensure success in generalizing employment skills in the community. All three classes offer Employment Specialists that provide assistance and support while students are on job sites.
Students learn how to write resumes, fill out application forms, and perform successful job interviews. Work-related behaviors and social skills that are needed for successful employment in today's workforce are also taught to the students. Students are evaluated by their employers, the Employment Specialist, and their teacher each six weeks. As a result, students have a better idea of what area of work they want to be employed in after completing these courses. At the end of the year, each student has a portfolio that contains a resume, important documents for filling out applications, and great references for future jobs. They are job ready! |
