Mission: The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle:

· Will succeed in rigorous curriculum,
· Will complete a rigorous college preparatory path,
· Will enter mainstream activities of the school,
· Will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and
· Will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

AVID’s systematic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase school wide/district wide learning and performance.

O.U.R Community Standards: O-ur
U-nderstanding
R-espect
Students that have been a part of my AVID class designed this community. As a collaborative community, they developed standards that they thought were vital in order to succeed in life. They came up with four questions:

1. How do we as collaborating community want to be treated by our leaders?
2. How do we as a collaborative community and individuals want to be treated by each other?
3. What are the community expectations in order to be successful during the school year?
4. How will we as a collaborative community resolve our conflicts?

After discussing these questions my students developed this motto that I still model for all of my students:
The community standards this year will be to live up to the goals we have set for ourselves. We are expected to be respectful to everyone who enters O.U.R. community. Individually we expect to be treated by others, including Coach Q. with respect, understanding, sincerity, and equality. We will resolve our conflicts without making the problem worse, and by listening to what the other person has to say. We all must remember to keep learning fun!

Supplies:
An attached list of supplies is included. Some of the supplies on this list will be given to you by me.

Grading:
40%-Binders
20%- Class work
25%- Tutorials
15% Projects and Tests

Late work: All homework assignments will be due the next class period unless told otherwise. All classroom activities will be due that class day unless I have assigned extended time. All students will have until the last day of the fifth week of the six weeks period to make up any zeros or failing homework assignments. The student completing a tutorial request with their problems stated in words must make these up in tutorials with me, and. No exceptions. All retakes can give students an 80 for that missing grade. Only two retakes on test may be taken per semester.

Re-teach/Re-test: A student may retake any test provided they have failed with a score below 70. Students may retake up to two tests per semester. This makeup work must also be taken in my tutorial period.

Absences: Do not miss my class! This is not a correspondence course and makeup work will be difficult. If you are absent, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain all the homework that was missed. Students are permitted as many days as absent to turn in work, with no penalty. After that time, refer to the late work section of this syllabus.
