TEACHING AMERICAN HISTORY GRANT
This is the last year for the Region XIII Teaching American History
project, The Relevant Constitution. High school U.S. History teachers
across Region XIII are invited to be a part of the project, which
benefits both the district and the teacher. The project offers
professional development opportunities with some of the nation's top
historians and scholars, money (registration, sub costs, stipend,
materials, and travel), instructional support for implementation of best
practices in the classroom, and a way to be part of a statistical study
to see what works in social studies classrooms. Please encourage at
least one U.S. History teacher from your district to take advantage of
this one-time opportunity to be a part of the project. We need teachers
for the Participant group and for the Control group, so the level of
participation can vary. Contact Carol Curtiss
(carol.curtiss@esc13.txced.net 512-919-5288) or Jodi Kuhn
(jodi.kuhn@esc13.txed.net 512-919-5425) for information. Apply online

- It's New To Me! Middle School Social Studies
Sept. 30, 2008, FA0812694
Being assigned a new teaching position or getting your first job in
social studies can be overwhelming. It's New To Me is a workshop that
provides an overview of the social studies courses taught and their
relationship with the TAKS objectives. It will also examine the "best
practices" in social studies and give teachers, whether brand new or

studies course. Cost: $80
- Building Vocabulary and Background Knowledge
Oct. 23, 2008, FA0814216
Teaching the abstract concepts and myriad details of social studies
courses proves difficult in today’s diverse classroom that includes
students with varying levels of background knowledge and vocabulary
proficiency. Come learn about strategies that will make an immediate
impact on student learning. Gary McKenzie, professor-emeritus from UT,
presents his method to help teachers provide background knowledge and
then helps participants try their hand at producing an example for use
in their classrooms. Workshop attendees can be part of a related Region
XIII project using the strategies-and receive a stipend for your work!
Cost: $80
- Social Studies Leadership Update
Nov. 18, 2008, FA0812111
Calling all Social Studies leaders! Principals, curriculum specialists
and coordinators, social studies teachers and department chairs! Attend
this session to receive the latest information and updates about social
studies across the region, state, and nation. Information is shared
regarding upcoming events and meetings, workshops and conferences, the
latest news from TEA, the State Board of Education, and the Legislature,
as well as successful materials and great strategies. The meeting also
provides an opportunity to network with social studies leaders from
other districts. Learn about trends, what’s working in other
districts, and what’s coming to local museums and libraries. And, of
course, investigate the economic, social, political, and geographic
impact these may have on social studies. All are welcome. (The spring
meeting will be April 7.) FREE
You may attend this workshop through videoconferencing. Contact Region
XIII to attend by this format.
