National Council for the Social Studies

Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies has grown to be the largest association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. NCSS engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. With members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 69 foreign countries, NCSS serves as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education. Organized into a network of more than 110 affiliated state, local, and regional councils and associated groups, the NCSS membership represents K-12 classroom teachers, college and university faculty members, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and leaders in the various disciplines that constitute the social studies.
Texas Council for the Social Studies

The Texas Council for the Social Studies represents social studies educators from across the state and serves as the official voice on textbook and social studies issues. The Texas Council hosts an annual fall conference of Texas social studies educators. The next fall conference is scheduled for October, 2005 in Galveston. The Texas Council honors outstanding elementary, middle, and secondary teachers who become nominees for the NCSS Outstanding Teacher Awards. Teachers are encouraged to join their social studies professional organization. Membership in TCSS provides teachers an opportunity to be recognized as educators who care about the future of social studies eduation in Texas.
Capital Area Council for the Social Studies

The Capital Area Council for the Social Studies was founded to support Social Studies educators regionwide. We currently have approximately 120 members from the Central Texas area. CACSS engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. The CACSS membership represents K-12 classroom teachers, college and university faculty members, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and leaders in the various disciplines that constitute the social studies.
Texas Social Studies Supervisors Assocation

The Texas Social Studies Supervisors Association promotes the common interest of social studies supervisors in curriculum, instruction, assessment, materials, research, and teacher training. TSSSA membership is open to TCSS members who have supervisory responsibility for social studies curriculum and instructional programs pre-kindergarten through grade twelve. Individuals with titles of director, department head or chairman, curriculum coordinator, consultant, supervisor, specialist or assistant principal are eligible for membership.
World History Association

The World History Association (WHA) was founded in 1982, with a mission to promote the study of global history by encouraging and supporting research, teaching, collegial communication, and publication in world history. The WHA endeavors to promote activities that will increase awareness of World History, understanding among and between peoples, and global consciousness. One of its primary missions is to assist teachers of world history at all academic levels by providing venues and media for discussion of innovative pedagogy and the best current research in the field.

There are NO membership fees or dues. TAGE members receive two newletters biannually announcing upcoming professional development conferences and events as well as general knowledge regarding the status of geographic education in the state and nation.
Texas State Historical Association

Organized on March 2, 1897, the Texas State Historical Association is the oldest learned society in the state. Its mission is to foster the appreciation, understanding, and teaching of the rich and unique history of Texas and by example and through programs and activities encourage and promote research, preservation, and publication of historical material affecting the state of Texas.
