Developmental Reading Asessment/DRA2 (K-5)
The DRA2 is given throughout the year to:
• help teachers identify students’ skills and plan for timely instruction in reading engagement, fluency, and comprehension
• monitor student growth on a variety of crucial skills and strategies that successful readers utilize
• prepare students to become successful readers
• support teachers and the school district in keeping parents and other stakeholders informed about the level of student reading achievement

To administer this test, students will read a book with me that they have never read before. As the students read, i will have a rubric that will help me assess the student's reading engagement, fluency, and comprehension. If the student scored high enough in each category, I will be able to move the student on to the next reading level. If the student did not, I will evaluate what area they were lacking in and address that during their small instruction time so they are able to succeed and move on the the next reading level. Please note however, that students develop at their own rates. Many times students will seem "stagnant" at one reading level but it takes many components to progress to the next. It is best to encourage students to read, try and help them in the areas they need support in, but to give them time as well!
DRA Reading Level Expectations by Grade Level (NEW for 2008-2009)
These are the levels that first graders are expected to be on at different times throughout first grade.
*Please remember that each child is unique and develop at their own rates. This is a guide! If they need support, I will be working closely with you to help your child succeed!
Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills/DIBELS (K-2)
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills.

Each measure has been thoroughly researched and demonstrated to be reliable and valid indicators of early literacy development and predictive of later reading proficiency.
