Our Social Studies curriculum, like science, will incorporate reading strategies for nonfiction texts. We will do substantial reading from the Social Studies textbook as well as supplementary resources, independently and with small groups. I also like to provide the opportunity for the kids to create some sort of hands-on project or book that serves to further their understanding of the concepts and to help with retention of newly learned material.
A few of the concepts we will be learning about in Social Studies this year include:
History: historical figures, our community, celebrations, and chronology
Geography: places, maps, globes, and characteristics of the environment.
Economics: goods and services, value of work
Government: rules and laws, authority figures, and public officials
Citizenship: characteristics of good citizenship
Culture: basic human needs, beliefs, customs, language, and traditions.
Science, technology, and society: how technology has affected daily life
