What are the components of a successful gifted program?
Joyce Juntune, Texas A & M professor of graduate studies in gifted education offers the following seven best practices for a gifted program.
1. Gifted students need to be taught creative and critical thinking skills, research skills, and creative problem solving skills.
2. Gifted students need opportunities to "test-out" of material they already know.
3. Gifted students need a foundation in the basics of the content areas. These should not be ignored. They just don't need to spend as much time on the basics as regular students.
4. Gifted students need opportunities to go in-depth in content areas that interest them.
5. Gifted students need opportunities to have complex discussions with other gifted students concerning content they are studying.
6. Gifted students need opportunities to solve real-life problems using content they have studied.
7. Gifted students need opportunities each year to conduct independent studies in areas of their interest and choosing.
