    Mr. Russell Montgomery

This is some information that you may need about our class as the year goes on.

Social Contract and Mission Statement

At the beginning of school, we talked about what would make our class successful both socially and academically. This is what the students came up with.

Social Contract
Be Respectful
Be a Good Listener
Be Responsible
Try my Personal Best all of the time
Have Fun

This is their social contract. They each signed one. It can be found in our classroom and in their binders.

Class Mission Statement
We the students of Parkside Elementary, in order to make it to 5th grade successfully, we will actively listen to learn reading, math, science, social studies and writing.

This is the mission statement that the students chose to show what we need to do academically to be successful.

School hours

The school day starts 7:45am and goes until 2:45pm. The front doors open at 7:25 for students so that they can get breakfast if needed. Children need to be in class ready to learn at 7:45. If they arrive after this time they will be counted tardy. The attendance bell is at 8:45. After this time, students will be counted absent. If they are absent at anytime, please send a note the day they come back.

Folders

Your child will bring a Parkside Mustang Folder home every week. This folder will contain work from the previous week along with various communications from the school. Please check the folder and send it back the next day. Leander ISD has gone "green" with paper. Therefore all other fliers not pertaining to school can be found here.

Homework

Students will generally have homework Monday through Thursday in their binder.
The purpose of this homework is:

to improve achievement
to nuture the development of good study habits
to familiarize parents with their child's work
to give parents a chance for involvement
to provide more time for in-class instruction

Students will have prior knowledge on the assignment and should not exceed more than 60 minutes every day.

Parents can help out by:

providing structure in the home including time, place and proper environment for completing homework.

Students will have a planner that they will write down their homework for the week. It will be the student's responsibility for writing it down.

Typically you will see:

*Spelling homework will come home on Monday and be due on Friday. Also, students will have core words to learn this year. They will add at least 5 words per week to their vocabulary. These words are located here.

*Math homework on Mondays and Wednesdays. It will due on Friday.

*For Reading they will do 100 minutes per week. They have a reading record sheet in their binder that they will mark the book and amount of time read. Parents will need to sign it every week. It will be checked on Mondays.

*Writing will have night writes periodically throughout the year. These will be some quick writes that will be about some fun prompts to continually practice writing.

*Science and Social Studies will have some at home projects throughout the year. Information explaining these projects will come home with the project at that time.

Grading Policy

A student can correct any daily assignment that is below 70%. Corrections can be made on the original assignment. This is optional and will be up to the student to get it done. Work that is turned in late may have points taken off. Please encourage your child to do their personal best the first time an assignment is given. As a class we discussed what quality work looks like and this is what they came up with.

It is on neat paper.
It has neat handwriting.
They have tried their best.
It is complete.
It is worked in the lines.
They have been efficient.
It has complete sentences.
They followed directions.
They have their name and date on it.

Help me encourage them to produce quality work from home and school.

Snacks

Your child is allowed to bring a healthy snack to class with them. It needs to be simple and easy to clean up. They can eat it at anytime they feel hungry, so it needs to be something that does not distract learning. They are allowed to bring water bottles only, but we have a water fountain in the classroom that they can use. Their water bottles will be stored in the cubbies, so that they do not get work wet.

Behavior

It is very important for your child to be focused and ready for learning. It is why we created our social and academic goals. Therefore if they are not following our contracts or doing something that keeps them from learning they will mark a behavior chart. This behavior chart is located in the binder and needs to be checked daily. An empty sheet is a good thing. Please sign once a week. I will check it so that I can tell that we are communicating effectively. Click here to see an example of what the behavior chart looks like.
