What are we learning about? |
In language arts we will continue focusing a lot on our writing, particularly on more "standard" writing such as making sure we having spaces between our words, capitals in the correct places, punctuation at the end of a sentence, and proper letter formation, such as tall letters touching the "sky", letters with "tails" going under the line, etc. The kids are really excited about using their Johnny can Spell sounds and words in our writing! We will add the blends ou, aw, au, ew, ui, oy, oi, & oo.
In math we are writing "number sentences" (3+7=10 or 10-8=2). We are also working on counting by 5's, 10's and 2's, greater than/less than, measurment and much more.
In science we will be learning about earth science, conservation, and dinosaurs in preparation for our field trip to the Austin Nature Center in early May.

Flat Stanley |
Many Flat Stanleys have already returned from their exciting travels all over the country! They are displayed on a map in the cafeteria if you would like to come check them out. If your Stanley is still visiting you might check on him and see when he is planning to return - the kids are SO excited when their's returns.

What's going on.... |
Now that we are done testing and are back to using our reading folders, am switching up the schedule a little bit. I can't seem to fit all four reading groups in on one day, so your child will either take home their folder on Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday. Please note that I am now including some type of written response to the books as well, so make sure your child is completing those, too.
As the weather gets warmer, please remind your kids to leave those flip-flops at home since they are not safe footwear at school. Toes get squished, ankles get twisted and they fall off on the playground. While this is not official "LISD" dress code requirements, I do strongly recommend against them in kindergarten. Thanks for your help!
Our field trip to the Austin Nature Center and Northwest Park (for a picnic lunch) will be on Tuesday, May 6th from about 9-1. Any parents that want to go with us MUST be cleared and have a volunteer background check through the front office. Forms are available from the office. They do take some time to process, so if you have not already gone through that process you may want to do it soon. Permission slips and more details will come home closer to the trip.
Wow – I cannot believe it is coming up on the end of the year! We have a lot going on in May, so let me give you some details now so you can mark your calendars. This information is also on our class website and on our calendar:
Tuesday, May 6th – Field trip to the Austin Nature Center and Northwest Park
More details and permission slips will come home next week. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring a disposable lunch with nothing that needs to be returned (water bottles, ice packs, etc.). You may want to apply sunscreen or bug spray to your child that morning, but I cannot do it at school (school policy). We will leave at 9:00 and return at 2:00, tired and happy!
Monday, May 12th – Muffins with Mom at 9:15
Please join us for a special Mothers’ Day celebration! We will pick you up from the cafeteria and escort you back to our room for some fun and surprises! If moms can’t make it then dads, grandmas or anyone else is welcome to be a stand-in!
Tuesday, May 20th – Student-led conferences
Your child will get the chance to share what they have learned this year with you! A sign up note for specific time slots will come home closer to that time. If you would like to have a separate conference with me about any specific concerns please let me know. **If it is at all possible for you to make arrangements for younger siblings please try to do so. That way your child has your full attention.
Friday, May 23rd – School-wide Field Day
Watch for details in Wednesday folders!
Friday, May 30th –Celebration of Learning 1:30 – 2:30
Please join us for a special celebration of our year!
Tuesday, June 3rd – Summer Birthdays Celebration
We will celebrate the birthdays of our friends who have their big day during the summer months when we are not at school (Sam, Alice, Mrs. Martin, McKenzie, Jared, Kelley and Rushil).
Again, more details will come home shortly before each event. Please let me know if you have any questions!
