We had a great time with our pumpkins!
We learned that pumpkins do not come from trees, but grow on a vine!
We also learned that farmers start planting the pumpkin seeds in July for a mid-October harvest! The first leaves that sprout are called the seed leaves which are round. The next next leaves are pumpkin leaves which are ruffled and prickly. Did you know that pumpkins start growing under the blossom and are green until they ripen? Pumpkins are then cut from the vine with nippers and then hauled by truck from the farm to a market.
Believe it or not, fossilized pumpkins!
We sorted our pumpkins many different ways!
Pumpkins by size, color of orange, long stems, short stems and smooth vs. bumpy
We learned that red and yellow paint make orange paint!
We painted the covers of our pumpkin books from the orange paint we made with yellow and red paint.
