My name is Tony Minter. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in May 1995 with an English major, Applied Calculus minor. I maintained a database at a media monitoring firm for several years after graduation. A media monitor is someone who watches TV and gets paid for it! It might sound like fun, but it got pretty dull. So, I decided to go back to school and become an elementary school teacher.
My first three years I taught Reading and Writing in the fifth grade at Giddens Elementary here in LISD. I enjoyed it, but as I said earlier, I really like Math a lot, too. So, when I was offered a chance to teach Math and Science here at Blockhouse I went for it. The funny thing is, while I had a blast teaching my fifth grade Math classes last year, I found that I really missed teaching Reading and Writing. I really wished I could do it all.
It is unusual to have a fifth grade class “self contained” as they say. But, I am very excited to say, I will be teaching all subjects this year! I believe that everything we do in life relates either to stories or puzzles. In Writing we learn to tell our own stories and in Reading and Social Studies we learn from the stories that others tell. Math and Science are about exploring puzzles and looking for solutions. I am looking forward to sharing my love of these things with my students this year!
