What are we doing this week?
Reading Wonders
For the next two weeks we will again revisit the first grade must know spelling words. Hopefully you have kept the list from previous weeks. If you need an additional copy let me know or go to the spelling words website and download them.
Math Counts
We are beginning our Geometry unit. Your child will be introduced to some beginning Geometry terms and concepts. We will be naming solids such as the cone, the pyramid, a rectangular prism and cylinders to name a few. If they come home and talk about these shapes encourage them to tell you some of the characteristics of these shapes. We will talk about the number of sides and faces each shape has.
Science Matters
We are winding up our solids, liquids, and gas study. On Friday we observed a blue ice cube melting in a glass of water. After we completed the observation together we wrote down what we learned or observed. I was very proud of the sentences they came up with. The sentences are as follows:
- Ice floats on water.
- The blue food coloring was slowly streaming out of the ice cube.
- Almost all the ice cube melted in between 3 and 5 minutes.
- Streams of blue food coloring turned the water blue.
- When we dropped the ice cube in the water it immediately popped up to the surface of the water.
- The ice cube started as big as our eyeballs and then dissolved to the size of a period.
- It looked like a quartz crystal with blue cotton candy in it.
Social Studies Learns
Perhaps did your child share with you some of the things we learned about the first pilgrims, their journey to America and some information about what life was like for the pilgrims? Ask your child about what life was like for a pilgrim child.
Free time!
Remember this Friday is our special show and tell day. The students may bring something from a vacation or trip.
